Work out markup and margin
Four ways to calculate, and every one reports both figures — because a 50% markup is not a 50% margin. Results update as you type, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

What is markup?
Markup is the percentage added to your cost price to calculate a selling price. It is based on cost.
If something costs £100 and you add 50% markup, the profit is £50 and the selling price is £150.
markup percentage = profit ÷ cost price × 100
What is margin?
Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. It is based on the final selling price, not the cost price.
If something costs £100 and sells for £150, the profit is £50. The margin is £50 ÷ £150 × 100 = 33.33%.
margin percentage = profit ÷ selling price × 100
Markup vs margin
Markup and margin are not the same thing. A 50% markup does not mean a 50% margin. If a product costs £100 and is sold for £150, the markup is 50%, but the margin is 33.33%. The profit is the same figure either way — only what it is measured against changes.
| Cost | Selling price | Profit | Markup | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £100 | £120 | £20 | 20% | 16.67% |
| £100 | £150 | £50 | 50% | 33.33% |
| £100 | £200 | £100 | 100% | 50% |
How to calculate selling price from markup
Multiply the cost price by 1 plus the markup percentage.
sell price = cost × (1 + markup percentage ÷ 100)
£80 cost with 25% markup = £80 × 1.25 = £100 selling price
How to calculate selling price from margin
Divide the cost price by 1 minus the margin percentage.
sell price = cost ÷ (1 − margin percentage ÷ 100)
£80 cost with 20% margin = £80 ÷ 0.8 = £100 selling price
A 100% margin is not possible using this calculation, because it would require an infinite selling price. These are simple pricing calculations for quick estimates only — check your own costs and business context, and speak to an accountant or adviser if you are unsure.
