How to add VAT
To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate, then add that VAT amount to the net amount.
£100 + 20% VAT = £100 + £20 = £120
gross = net × (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)
How to remove VAT
To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the VAT rate. Taking 20% off the gross figure is not the same calculation and gives a different answer.
£120 including 20% VAT = £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net
net = gross ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)
