The maths

How to calculate a percentage

To find X% of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply it by the number.

20% of 150 = 20 ÷ 100 × 150 = 30

How to calculate percentage increase

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value, then multiply by 100.

150 to 180 = (180 − 150) ÷ 150 × 100 = 20% increase

How to calculate percentage decrease

The calculation is identical. A negative result simply means the value went down, and the minus sign is dropped when the change is described in words.

200 to 150 = (150 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100 = −25%, so it is a 25% decrease
